If you're a single parent - we know you've got your hands full! - and plenty of challenges before you. We understand... AND you can use all the help you can get - right? One of the things that impressed us with the traditional Jewish community was how strong the support system was for parents - single or otherwise. And we've seen single parents who have taken a strong stand FOR Judaism in their homes and it's helped them in many ways. It's helped them to get the kids under control - because the rules and regulations are actually HELPFUL in maintaining discipline and a sense of order in the household - something that's really very, very important for the wellbeing of the child - and his sense that his environment is a SAFE one in which to grow and develop. We've also seen young children of single mothers really EMBRACE traditional practices - because they recognized something that's helpful to them and their mothers - they recognized the value of the structure and order and the sense of support that comes from being part of a tight community. We believe that single parents have the MOST to gain from the Friday evening Shabbat dinner at home with the kids - and other family and guests. It just seems to CENTER the family - ground them - so that there's a sense of stability and strength. The FOUNDATIONS are less shakey when you attach yourself to something as substantial and long-lasting and regular as the Shabbat practices. And as much fun. When we interviewed people who were returnees to traditional Judaism for a radio project - one of the mothers spoke about how it was her young son's idea to become "frum" - observant. It was especially meaningful to this youngster as he didn't have a father in the picture. For whatever reason, he just took to keeping Shabbat and the mother decided to "go with it" - and that step helped to sustain that little family with a strong sense of connection to something substantial - something meaningful and powerful - and very stabilizing. It was nice to see. If nothing else, we say, institute the one best Jewish ritual that's a real pleasure for you and your family to engage in... Click here to find out what it is and more about it.... At least give it a try - we think you'll like it - a lot.
