One of my favorite moments in my personal journey within Judaism was the Shabbos when I stood in my Orthodox synagogue (and I am not Orthodox) - and looked around and realized that I knew most of the people in the small congregation. I had such a sense of connection to a deeply, richly Jewish community. The group was in the midst of prayer with the men all wrapped in their beautiful prayer shawls - all different shades of white with blue stripes and long fringe. And they were murmuring the prayers in the manner of traditional Ashkenazak Jews - and I felt almost as though I were back in Europe a hundred years ago - or maybe two hundred or five hundred years ago! - because there was such a sense of ancientness to it - and that ancientness was beautiful to me. It transported me to another time - another place - not necessarily defined... It was at once familiar AND very exotic and different - and haunting. I LOVE that sense of ancientness in Judaism - it's quite transporting... I LOVE the sound of the shofar on the High Holidays. Even in a modern Reform synagogue it transports me back to the hills of Judea where Jews signalled one another from the hilltops with a haunting blast from the ram's horn - about the start of the holidays - or the new moon. It evokes such a keen sense of our ancient history - we, Jews, an ancient people. I LOVE that! We ARE an ancient people and an ancient religion and an ancient community - and I just adore feeling that - experiencing it - I savor the ancientness of our people and religion.... Nothing does this more than attending a bris where you can practically sense Abraham calling to us from across the millenia - echoing through thousands of years of Jewish history and practice - the covenant with God! - to us in the modern world as we partake of this ancient ritual - so old - and still so powerful - the room fairly vibrates with the profundity of it - if you tune into it. It's just so powerful... I love that... I absolutely love the ancientness of Judaism... We are very interested in your feedback! Please do e-mail us your thoughts about our website and program.
